The Electric Variable Transmission BV is an advanced knowledge center which specializes in the design and development of state of the art electric variable transmissions, aiming not only to improve but also to revolutionize the automotive, railway and maritime industry. It is a joint venture between the high tech companies Altramotive, EMechForce and Magnetic Innovations.
These companies have the experience, as well as the design and development capabilities to support the successful introduction in the various markets. A close collaboration with renowned research organization TNO has been formed.
What would be more ideal than a fully integrated, scalable, extremely flexible transmission that can be used in almost any type of application?
The EVT is just that, an innovative transmission concept consisting of two concentric electrical machines, meaning only two moving parts. It has two mechanical ports and one electrical port. It can function as a fully variable transmission with the possibility to be hybridized when using the electrical port. It is a fully scalable system with a range from light duty to very heavy duty applications.
The customer’s benefits of the system are:
Reduced fuel consumption due to engine operation near the optimal efficiency points, engine idle stop, engine downsizing, regenerative braking and higher alternator efficiency.
Emission reduction due to enhanced start stop, avoiding fast engine transients, electrical aftertreatment, pure electric mode.
Improved drivability and comfort due to continuously variable transmission and transient boost.
Higher performance due to electrical boost and optimal power use of the engine.
Individuality due to unique patented technology. This means that transmission suppliers and OEMs can offer added value to the end user.
In summary, the USP’s of the EVT are:
Best all round offer (between efficiency, comfort, performance and drivability at the lowest possible cost).
Inherent versatility (tunable, scalable, flexibility in packaging).
Completely new, innovative and elegant system.
Patent protected.
The main market areas are:
Light duty automotive (passenger cars, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, allwheel drive).
Heavy duty automotive (bus and truck).
Maritime.
Railway.
The transport industry is always looking for ways how to address all the different requirements in the best possible way.
Important drivers currently are:
Environmental pressure from end customers and government (CO2-reduction and harmful emission reduction).
End customer demands on higher comfort and performance (drivability, more electrical power required for auxiliaries, outright performance).
End customer demand on individuality, innovation and image.
OEM goal to increase profitability and minimize cost.
The electrical variable transmission can be a solution to fulfill these often contradictionary drivers.
The Electric Variable Transmission BV has designed a variety of EVT’s for different applications. E.g. a proof of concept for a passenger car has been built and tested to prove that it exceeds the performance of existing combined hybrid powertrains. Independent test results have confirmed this.
A number of patents have been submitted and have been granted. Various new applications are patent pending. This strong patent portfolio makes the electric variable transmission a very strong contender in the field of advanced powertrains.
The basic principle of the electric variable transmission was already early recognized as being the most compact and elegant of all transmissions. Early adopters included Hefel and Porsche, already at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Only recent developments in electric machine control technology and 3D simulation methods made it possible to let the ecletric variable transmission show its true and full potential. During this last decade, the EVT development team has succesfully designed, built and tested EVT’s, initially for the very demanding automotive industry applications.
